I have a 1207 that I use that is very similar to the 1217 and 1219. I have found some problems with the steel used to mount the gear boxes. I have had breaks and stress cracks there and on the tongue. I love mine and it has paid for itself many times over.

Check with Sickle Works online for a bolted sickle when you are readyh for that upgrade. I run mine as fast as I can sit in the seat in heavy alfalfa with a '68 Ford 2000. If you have a chunk of rubber knocked off the rollers then get some good 2 part epoxy and I work some back in under all around the hole and it will lock down on that steel roller and not cause any more to break off. I want to thank everyone for thier thoughts and advice, knew I could count on you folks to come through.

Yesterday's result- we bought it. It is in really great condition! Hardly appears used.

A few cosmetic scratches on the metal work. It has the riveted sections, but he has already added the high arch hold downs so the bolt on type can be used. When asked how much hay he has been doing, he said about 300 round bales a year. In my opinion, that's not much, seeing we do well over a thousand a year at present.

He even had the owners manual with it! Never seen weather, always shed kept.

I think we made a great deal. We'll know this spring. Thanks again everyone! Ron: I have had a 1219 JD for several years now. When I bought it they told me a fellow had tried it but he could not make the windrows wide enough to round bale like he wanted it to.

It took me about 30 minutes of running to find out what was wrong with it. Some one had taken the tail section off and had not put it back on right. In checking your new one out. Check your u joints in the drive line. Also the ones coming out of the gear boxes. These machines are gear driven and not chains that will streatch. Check your rolls for rubber missing.

Your belt drive to the wobble box and also make sure the wobble box is not loose. Worn sections and guards are normall wear. Your real bats are made out of alluminum and rocks will bend them. This does not seem to cause any problem.

However I have picked up a few rocks and have never had one go through the rolls. They will make a horrible racket and you can stop and get them out. Small animals and chuncks of grass or dirt will go through with a snap. I have even ran a deer fawn through and that is a horrible stinking mess. They don't require to much power.

I pull mine with an 830 3cyl utility JD diesel (35 HP). In good standing material I can run 4 MPR.

The only problems I have had is sections coming loose and blown Hyd Hose which are normal wear problems. You have an inside flap that you can adjust to controll you cut windrow along with adjustible tail fins. I agree with the comment about checking for oil leaks. I just bought a 1219 myself a few weeks ago from a dealer and discovered a leak in the seal on the main gear box. The rubber on the seal was completely gone. I repaired it myself for less than $25 so it wasn't that big of a deal.

No telling what a dealer would have charged to replace the seal. I paid about the same price as this one but have spent a couple hundred dollars on a spare sickle, hydraulic hoses, etc.

Looking forward to using it this year. I hope it's as good as others have said.

I am have a bit of a issue though. When I cut tall grass, short, thick or pretty much and thing the sickle seems to clog. I've read the manual and adjusted the reel and made sure the knives are sharp. Mine did, and even when I replaced them and new knife, it still didn't handle thick grass very well.

I spent the money for non-clog guards and it made a different machine out of it. You can get what you need from Shoup cheaper than Deere. They also help a lot when finishing up a swath where you have to pull in some cut stuff-hardly ever clogs anymore. The manual talks about the non-clog guards and how to install them.

It took awhile to figure out, but with practice you can see when your ground speed matches how fast the material is moving through.

It'll be pretty close to the speed of your in-feed reel. Also, be sure your in-feed reel tines are all there and coming close enough to the guards to take the material off them Pete Mike(NEOhio) Tractor Guru Joined: 12 May 2013 Posts: 3742 Location: Geauga County, Ohio Posted: Tue Oct 17, 2017 3:34 pm Post subject: Re: John Deere 1219 haybine I have a 1207 and I find it's usually better to try to move faster and crowd more hay through it. Most of my pluging happens making a turn or when lugging uphill. Whatever speed you run at make sure the reel speed is a little ahead of the travel speed. The hard part is adjusting the individual guards to match the knife sections. I want to put new guard on mine for next year, going to look into non-clog.

In wet/damp a little slower to allow the reel to clear the sickle off.

Your clogged sickle sounds like you driving too fast and ramming the hay/grass into the guards. Does anyone know if you have to buy one of those $10 clips for every guard or is a clip for every other guard good enough?
